Re:waste - your companion to understanding the impacts of your waste

With approximately 8,000 thriving businesses in the City of Adelaide, there is a constant stream of human activity including fast fashion, indulging in an abundance of fresh produce, and an unawareness of how to implement recycling best practices.
From speaking to business precinct leaders, we had a deeper understanding of the real issues faced by the businesses stopping them from making better decisions in waste management, including no central locations for waste collections, lack of knowledge in reuse/recycle waste cycle and not understanding the impact of the waste being produced and not correctly classified.
re:waste comes in as a solution to help us re-imagine the possibilities of understanding, tracking and re-organising all the waste that goes through this city we call home.
Our program is created to inspire business owners to take accountability of their daily waste products. By using geographical data of the businesses from the City of Adelaide, we were able to identify the most relevant locations based on the industries and business locations to implement zero avoidable waste hubs with smart weigh bins. The hubs are accessible for businesses to dispose of reusable and recyclable waste. The smart weigh bins are linked to our online platform which allow us to collect robust data on the amount and type of waste that goes through the City of Adelaide.
Business owners are able to track and receive energy benefits by using the hubs. We are raising community awareness through promoting financial benefits created with correctly reused/recycled waste.
The feedback and data would allow us to upgrade and customise the re:waste hubs and replicate this approach to a wider community. Together we can build the first city that reimagines a sustainable and inviting waste management system to achieve zero avoidable waste.

Data Story


Journey 1 Exploring the dataset

We selected the best locations for the precincts from the available location dataset, namely the properties land use dataset. Using the business addresses in this dataset, we would be able to map the aggregation of businesses within the City of Adelaide against the precinct map provided. (see here) But we need to convert the dataset into spatial data to visualise locations on the map.
We wanted to incorporate an additional layer of detail into our data story. We wanted to understand not only where the businesses were located, but also what type of business they were. By using properties land use dataset, we were able to extract land used for residential and public purposes, and compare this to land used for commercial purposes. This included identifying where commercial businesses, such as cafes and restaurants were mostly located within the City of Adelaide, thus enabling us to pinpoint the best possible location for our shared precincts – known as re:waste hubs.

Journey 2 Data cleaning

As the dataset was immensely large for standard / free processing software, we separated the dataset into manageable chunks. We also found that businesses would generally not list their addresses in a consistent format, thus we needed to thoroughly clean the dataset using Python and Alteryx.


Journey 3 Data manipulation

After we cleaned the dataset, we ran a Python model to get coordination for each location to enable map visualisation. Then we used Alteryx to combine the chunks of data. A sample workflow is shown below.

Then, we plotted these details onto a map to help us identify the best locations for as re:waste hubs in busy business precincts. We were able to do this using PowerBI, and a sample dashboard is shown below.
